Circumstantial Depression and How to Cope

Circumstantial depression is caused by sad events that occur in the life of a person. These sad events include job loss, relationship problems, or exam failure. Many people cannot cope sufficiently with these sad or stressful conditions. They, therefore, respond through symptoms of fear and hopelessness.

Situational depression is easily addressed when the affected person adapts to the new environment. Circumstantial depression is viewed as an adjustment disorder because it ends when the affected individual adapts to the new environment.

Situational depression symptoms

Some of the symptoms of circumstantial depression are anxiety, stress, hopelessness, and depression. Students who have situational depression are usually anxious. High anxiety levels can make them engage in violent activities. Adults may miss work, or engage in substance abuse.

Sleeping habits is affected by situational depression. The sleep pattern of the affected person is disrupted by anxiety and negative thoughts.

Situational depression treatment

A person who has symptoms of situational depression can seek treatment from a doctor. Treatment is especially sought if the symptoms interfere with normal activities of the affected individual. The doctor conducts tests so as to rule out other medical conditions. The doctor becomes sure that the patient has situational depression, if he or she does not have other physical or mental conditions.

The best treatment that the mental health practitioner can provide is counseling. The counseling treatment enables the patient to properly manage stress. Support groups and family therapy can also be used to provide counseling to the affected person. Patients easily overcome high stress levels if they are supported by their family members and friends.

Current status of circumstantial depression

Circumstantial depression is common in the current society because many people have problems. These problems include broken relationship, financial challenges, social isolation, and loss of job.

Psychologists consider depression as a response to negative life experiences. People can minimize depression through adopting positive practices such as counseling, meditation, and exercise.
